| Rationale: The monetary contribution of $182,994 is for the acquisition of 16 hectares of native vegetation that provides significant foraging habitat for black cockatoos.
The size of the offset required was determined using the federal Department of the Environment offset calculator.
With the funds provided 16 hectares of remnant native vegetation was purchased. Note: The offset area is 16 hectares of the 21 hectare lot.
Based on the information obtained from the Property Offset Assessment by AECOM, it is considered that the site contains suitable foraging and nesting habitat for black cockatoos and is significant as a remnant in an area that has been extensively cleared (mapped as vegetation complex Yoongarilup which retains approximately 38 per cent of its pre-European extent).
The majority of the vegetation is dominated by Tuart woodland and was considered to be in good to very good (Keighery 1994) condition . In some patches, Tuart woodland is replaced by an open forest of Tuart-Jarrah-Marri, with understorey containing Banksia species.
Given the above, the offset is considered to be relevant and proportionate to the significance of the environmental values being impacted, mitigating the residual impacts of the project. |
